GREETINGS!!

Hey there!! Book-ending your week this time out with some cool news! Tomorrow, Saturday the 18th, Comicazi is hosting The Battle Of The Comic Shop All Stars!!
What in Crom’s name is that, you’re asking?? Well, Effendi, we’re having other Boston area comic shops in our store competing against each other for the privilege of being the Supreme Intelligence!!
We here at Comicazi have created 100 questions running the gamut of geekdom from comics to board games to pulps to movies to video games to TV to fantasy and more!!
The 10 competitors each have four-member teams all striving to win the title. There will be 3 rounds of 25 questions each. The top 5 scoring teams then go on to compete for the title of Supreme Intelligence and the Grand Prize Rock Band bundle donated by Harmonix.
This is all being done in the name of fun and community between us all and charity. All proceeds for this super fun event go to Boston Partners In Education. You can find out more about this great organization by checking out their site.

The competitors are the following excellent comic shops and gaming shops, with a couple of fellow geek-savvy businesses!

Comicopia

Hub Comics

Million Year Picnic

Web Head Enterprises

Larry’s Comics

Magic Dragon

Weekly Dig

Harmonix Music

This is going to be a great time!! Due to this very special event, Comicazi will close early on Saturday night. And as there will be a large number of attendees, the event is closed to any sort of viewing public.
But never fear!! We’re recording the whole thing!! And beginning on Monday the 20th, we’ll be airing the whole trivia night fun on the Comicazi web page over the course of the week!!!
So keep your eyes peeled friends!!
Thanks and be well!

GREETINGS!!

There’s a lot coming at you this week so I’m going to get right down to it. But first I want to give props to long-time Comicazi friend Dave Murgo for sending me the new image next to Frank Cho’s Liberty Meadows. Our Bad Kid is going to take a break for a while but I thought Dave’s piece was a pretty cool stand-in. What do you think?
OK! Let’s get into this issue!!
This past Friday evening, the Batman:The Animated Series viewing night was a big hit! It was a full house with lots of new faces. And there were Bat-themed snacks and a raffle which raised some cash for the One Fund Boston.
See the things you miss out on when you don’t read all of your Comicazi online posts? But it’s cool. You may still remain part of our Source Wall. Yeah, I went all Fourth World on you.
Sorry.
Anyway, there’s plenty of groovy things happening at Comicazi all the time. Those handy dandy links above will lead you right to all your fave online spots where you can read all about it. As the legions of newsboys used to say

For those gaming enthusiasts amongst you, you may well know that there are regular Magic:The Gathering happs every Sunday and Monday. Gameboy Steve wanted me to let you know all about it.

Sunday’s Event

Description: Welcome to your Sunday afternoon. You’re hanging with the Bad Kids dabbling in a little black Magic. But guess what? It only costs you a buck! And for that buck you may walk out with a few booster packs. This isn’t the Boston Grand Prix so don’t worry if you don’t have a $1000 constructed deck. We like to play for low stakes avoiding the dark sides of Magic. So come on down and check it out!

Monday’s Event

Event type: Booster Draft (Swiss rounds)

Time: 6-10pm

Entry: $15 (21+ only)

Description: It’s Monday night and you’re bored. Whoever does anything on Mondays anyway?! So why not come down to Johnny D’s and get a draft in with a few draughts? Prizes are given to the top placers but the real reward are Oscar’s infamous Rancor and Azorius Charm shots. Come on, what other excuse do you need to go to a bar?

I don’t really need an excuse to go to a bar. Thanks Steve!

And this coming Saturday, the 18th, we’re having a very special fund-raising event. It will be taped, so we’ll be sharing it with all of you here and on our social media. We’d love to have a live studio audience but that won’t be possible.
But before the event, from 4 to 8, Tonya Ratz of Make Me A Dragon will be at the shop doing custom dragon drawings for you and donating 100% of the proceeds to Boston Partners In Education.
You can check out her work at http://www.makemeadragon.com/

You know that while you’re hanging out in the shop, be it to wait on a sweet dragon custom drawing or await a classic cartoon viewing, you can pick up some very cool items! There are all manner of corners in the store where you can find something that you didn’t even know you wanted!
Now and then, I’ll feature some of these sections of the store. This go around, I wish to point out one of my favorites! Right at the front of the store before the Marvel Comics graphic novels are the comic book glasses and drinking cups!
There are the new Toon Tumblers featuring your favorite Marvel and DC characters as well as the vintage plastic cups from 7-Eleven spotlighting the same properties!

As you can see from the signage, they’re wildly affordable! So much so that it’s an effort of will worthy of wielding one of those green rings to not grab one or two of these every time I’m at the shop.
The 7-Eleven cups are obviously the pieces that would be the hardest to reacquire as they’re from the 70’s. But we could do it.
The Toon Tumblers are newer and as he’s a local guy and still cranking out new glasses, we could order whichever character you wanted. Just let us know the next time you’re at the shop who you want. Now excuse me. I need to have some juice from my Space Ghost glass.

Once you grab yourself a superhero glass on Wednesday the 15th, you can then mosey on over to the new release wall and take a look at all of the new comics! You can do your own version of time travel by reading all about what’s coming then….now in …..

As you well know, Comicazi has lots of paraphernalia with our name and/or the Bad Kid on it. There are buttons, bookmarks, t’shirts, and more. Well I received a picture from one of our customers showing his Comicazi love whilst abroad and I thought it would be a great idea if you guys and gals did the same.
Here’s Kevin on vacation on the island of Capri in the Gulf of Naples. Show the love my friend!!

Pretty awesome right? Many thanks to Kevin for sending this in! Now if you guys are out and about somewhere cool and/or far away, definitely take a picture and email it to me. You can be as creative as you like with the pictures as long as they’re relatively tasteful, natch! I’ll publish one pic in a newsletter every time I receive one via my email found above. And when I publish your Comicazi love picture, you’ll get 20% off your next purchase at the shop! But of course, you’ll need to stop by Comicazi and purchase a shirt or other store branded item so come on down!

While I’m on the topic of awesome, here’s something else for you to wrap your mind around….and your claws when we get it in! I’ve mentioned local artist Erica Henderson before, most recently at our Boston Non-Con event a few weeks ago. She’s a cool artist and great friend to the shop who recently did the art chores on Atomic Robo.
Well she has a Kickstarter project featuring her children’s book, Baby’s First Mythos, You can check out the Kickstarter here:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/49028176/babys-first-mythos

Baby’s First Mythos is a wonderfully twisted book that learns the young ones their ABC’s and numbers via Lovecraftian horrors from the Outer Dark.
The book has been in print for a decade but this is the first time it will be published by the creators- AND, since Erica drew the first book in high school, the new book is going to feature entirely new art!
I actually cannot wait for this to hit our shelves!!

We’re just about done but before we reach the end, you just have to see what’s up for auction on E-Bay!!

And finally, the almost-end of this issue!! Yes, almost. It’s time to let you know of what will be capping off the newsletter most every week from this point forward. A little audience participation, if you will. This feature is a throwback to when I used to write the blog on the old Comicazi web page years ago. What is it? Well one of the things I did back then was have a weekly poll. I felt it was a cool thing to bring back so I’m kicking it off today. Please follow the link directly below to place your vote!

http://poll.fm/4840p

That does it, by Crom!! Be well and long may you assemble!

GREETINGS!!

As of this writing, I have seen Iron Man 3 twice now. It was highly enjoyable and a bit of a departure from what I was expecting. Much more of a character study but with enough action film/superhero tropes to satisfy.
If you have yet to see it, you should check it out for sure. And ask us down at the shop for some sweet comic tales featuring the Golden Avenger. Everyone needs a little iron in their diet!!

OK. Bad jokes aside, let’s move on. Last week, I left off mentioning that there were a couple more items of interest to reveal to you.
The first one you can definitely help with! As most of you know, Comicazi has been around now for 13 years! When Bob, Dave, and I got together lo, those many moons ago, we knew we could have something special. I, for one, am still astounded that 13 years later, I’m a part of such a cool place and have made so many connections through here. And I’m pretty positive that the guys feel the same way too.
Now as for the bit where you can help, I put forth this. Comicazi has been in business for 13 wild years. Yet we only have 49 Yelp reviews. I ask that if you’re so inclined, that you take the time to write up something quick about the shop. Be honest. Thank you.
We want to continue to serve you and the people that have yet to discover us as well as we can possibly can. There’s at least another 13 years of awesomeness to go!!

The other tidbit of info I had for you last week was a recommendation. This is a title that you may have heard of but maybe disregarded. As a matter of fact, I know that many folks have. There are currently only 4 subscribers to the book at the shop!
I’ll be honest and admit that I was skeptical of the book and the character. But I decided to give the first issue a try because of the writer. He’d always impressed me before and I was more than willing to give one issue a shot. I speak of Jeff Parker’s Red She-Hulk.

Yes, Red She-Hulk. I know. And yes, #58 is the first issue. It picks up the numbering of the previous Hulk series which spotlighted the Red Hulk. Parker sets up a quest for Red She-Hulk that traverses the Marvel Universe and ties in to Hickman’s S.H.I.E.L.D. series, raising some interesting questions.
She’s teamed with Machine Man, the cool, snarky version that Warren Ellis updated in Nextwave and surprisingly the pairing works. The two race against time to rescue a young girl and there’s enough intrigue and history throughout to keep you riveted.
The story is about 8 issues in so far and I’m always pleasantly taken with each issue’s turn. They’re currently all at the shop now. Give it a try!!

Some more comics to try can be found this Wednesday May 8!! Read about ‘em in……

We’re just about done but before we reach the end, you just have to see what’s up for auction on E-Bay!!

There’s a Wolverine movie hitting this summer and you just might want to bone up (hah!) on some reading. Here’s a 90-issue run of your favorite Canadian to get you started!

And I do believe it’s the 35th anniversary of that venerable sci-fi franchise Battlestar Galactica. How better to celebrate than with vintage 12″ action figures? Lorne Greene forever!!!

Staying all sci-fi for you, we’ve got this sweet Star Trek collectible calendar from Stardate 1976.

And some quick mentions to make note of. Our Drink And Draw has moved to Tuesdays and the new meetup is Tuesday May 14.
Also there’s a little Batman viewing thingie happening on Friday the 10th. What’s this, you say? Come on True Believers, check out that event calendar on the Comicazi web page for the fun! It’s always right at the top of your weekly newsletter issue baby!!
Keep on keepin’ on and I’ll catch you in a week!

GREETINGS!!

Whew!! Have I got a lot to let you guys know about this issue!! The big news is that the Boston Comic Con is back on!! This is great news!! The new dates are August 3 and 4 and the show will be held at the Seaport World Trade Center. I believe many of the same guests will be in attendance as were scheduled for the postponed show last weekend. And it’s my understanding that even more creators are coming in support of our city and its comic lovers!! Some of these names are familiar to you: Brian Azzarello, Paul Gulacy, Terry Moore, and Howard Chaykin! To name a few.
Check out their page at www.bostoncomiccon.com for more details and we’ll see you there!!

The Con was cancelled last weekend in the wake of the manic week starting with the Boston Marathon bombings and the shootouts and day-long manhunt of the suspects, culminating in one’s capture. As we all know.
And to do our own small part to help alleviate the Boston comic fan’s disappointment at the Con’s cancellation, we here at Comicazi held an impromptu Not-The-Boston-Comic-Con signing at which a dozen of the creators slated for Con appearances came to the shop and did free signings and sketches. It was an incredibly busy and wonderful day! A day I’ll always be proud of taking part in.
Our very own Tom was taking video footage of the entire day. He edited his takes down to a 5 minute video that is currently on our web page and is a very well done piece that sums up the feelings of the day. Please take a look and share it, thanks.

Comicazi Not-Boston-Con

Also in response to that terrible week, we have created some t-shirts in honor of Boston’s spirit.

These shirts are $20 each. $15 of each shirt sold goes directly to One Fund Boston. They are at the shop now.

Looking ahead we have another exclusive newsletter deal for you!! And this one is pretty rad! You have a chance to win tickets to the Museum of Fine Arts to see Stan Sakai – creator of Usagi Yojimbo – speak on Saturday May 11!!
The first two readers who come into the shop with a printout of this very newsletter, let’s say specifically the portion outlining this deal, will win passes. The deal begins on Tuesday. Let ‘er rip readers!!

This past week the new Previews catalog hit the shelves. And if you’ve been reading this newsletter, then you know that means I’m going to hit you up with some sweet picks from the Previews!! Let’s take a look at what I have suggested for you, shall we?
Dark Horse has the return of classic hero from yesteryear, Captain Midnight, in an ongoing series. He’s just part of Dark Horse’s newest venture into the super hero arena. They’re treading far more smartly than the last attempt in the 90’s.

Another super hero entry is Catalyst Comix, a 9-issue mini-series by Joe Casey and a variety of cool artists. These guys will give super heroes a back alley facelift.
Mike Mignola brings back his cool pulp hero in the 2-issue Lobster Johnson: A Scent Of Lotus.
And the first 6 issues of Brian Wood’s excellent Star Wars are collected in trade paperback.

DC begins the Trinity War in all of the July issues of its Justice League titles. If you’re up for another mega DC thing, then this is for you, Effendi!
The title I cannot wait to get is Batman ‘66!! It’s a re-imagining of the classic Batman TV series by uber-scribe Jeff Parker and artist Jonathan Case!

The Vertigo imprint offers Collider, a new sc-fi mystery as well as the return of Tom Strong in the 6-issue series, Tom Strong & The Planet Of Peril!

IDW gives you the 4-issue Rocketeer/Spirit:Pulp Friction.

Image has two notable offerings in Ghosted, a horror/crime mashup and Satellite Sam by Matt Fraction and Howard Chaykin. It’s a violent, sexy noir thriller set in 1951 but what would you expect from Chaykin?

Marvel gives us yet another Avengers title with Avengers A.I. which focuses on Hank Pym and lets us know what’s shaking in the aftermath of Age Of Ultron.
Apparently you will need to pick up Guardians Of The Galaxy #5. Not only is it co-written by Neil Gaiman but it features one of his creations. That is all I will say about this. Just to keep the 7 people who don’t know whom it is in suspense.
Avenging Spider-Man gets cancelled and becomes Superior Spider-Man Team Up. Which is pretty much what it was anyway. But hey! It’s a great opportunity to give us a new #1 issue!
And Hawkeye has an annual.

Action Lab has Molly Danger, an all ages adventure hardcover by the excellent Jamal Igle.

Archaia has an original hardcover tale updating the manga classic Cyborg 009.
Also there’s Jim Henson’s The Storyteller trade paperback.

Avatar wants you to know that George R.R. Martin does more than Games Of Thrones. Thrill to his horror tale Skin Trade. Or not.

Boom! Studios serves up Day Men, a cool sounding vampire tale, notable for being the return of artist Brian Stelfreeze to comics since 2005!
There’s also the weird Western flavored Six-Gun Gorilla with just a dash of kooky sci-fi. Say no more!

It’s going to be comic-tastic!

This past Saturday we had Joe Quinones signing at Comicazi. He had some excellent prints of his art and pages of original art from his books. The man is prolific and has a unique style and sense of humor reflected in his work. Some wonderful pieces. I’m pretty psyched for my Aquaman splash page. Thanks sir!!
And keep an eye out here and on our other online locations for future signings. See the links above.

Let’s close this issue out by taking a look at what’s in store for you on E-Bay, shall we?

Check out this vintage hard-to-find board game!

And another vintage item from the halcyon days of the late 80’s, this sweet mobile. Yeah, I said that!

Well, friends, the end of this issue is fast approaching. I had still more information to impart but it can wait until next week. Can you stand it?

GREETINGS!!

Yep. Me again. This past week I know there were extra newsletters from me gracing your inboxes but it was rather an exceptional week.
There was, of course, the insanity which gripped Boston and its environs. My heartfelt wishes and thoughts to all.
One of the repercussions of the madness was the postponement of the Boston Comic Con this past weekend. I was pretty bummed by this fact but I fully understand the reason why and am in support of the great guys at BCC. It is my understanding that it will be rescheduled. So never fear!
But in the wake of all this, something wonderful happened. Creators who were in town for the Con graciously worked in conjunction with many local shops to put together impromptu Con substitutes. And if you can’t tell where this is leading, yes, Comicazi was definitely in on this action!
We worked in conjunction with the BCC’s own Colin Solan Friday evening to confirm a number of appearances for a Saturday showing at Comicazi. We hosted a free admission to see Tim Seeley, Agnes Grabowska, Tim Sale, David Mack, Don Rosa, Ming Doyle, and Erica Henderson. They all graciously gave of their time with free signings and sketches.
There were even unexpected creator appearances by Nick Bradshaw, Ale Garza, and Bill Willingham!!
There was a line at the door a full hour before opening that only faltered 30 minutes before the event ended at 4pm. It was a wonderfully busy day for us and I would like to take a moment to thank all of the staff at the store for a job well done.
And also thank our guests for being so damn nice and shopping in our store afterward and the nice things they said in social media that I’ve seen. Tim Sale was kind enough to stop for a pic with me after a long day.

Also, many thanks to Revival and Hack/Slash creator Tim Seeley for the beer!
And many thanks to all of the folks who cycled through the shop on Saturday. The attitude was great, everyone was in high spirits and no one seemed to mind a short wait. We want to see many of you folks return to Comicazi! Especially the two cosplayers I featured in the pic next to the Bad Kid. We have an annual Halloweeniversary ya know!!

Bleeding Cool ran a story about our day if you haven’t seen it. Check it out!
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/04/20/scenes-from-a-non-boston-comic-con/

Relative normalcy returns this week with many of our regular features such as Comicazi Book Club on Tuesday wherein they’ll be discussing Atomic Robo volume 1 at 7:30pm; Pathfinder meets on Thursday: and Comedycazi rocks your Saturday night for $5! These happs and more can be found on our event calendar on our web page. Check our handy links above True Believers!!

And, of course, Wednesday brings us all new comics! Here’s what’s shipping this Wednesday courtesy of

Good stuff!! More good stuff happening at Comicazi is the Joe Quinones signing on Saturday from 11am to 2pm! If you thought this past Saturday’s signing-fest was it for us, well you were wrong! Local boy made good Joe will join us and sign stuff and have his artwork on display! Not only is he a swell guy and excellent artist but he bakes a mean cookie. Come on by this Saturday the 27th!!

Let’s close this issue out by taking a look at what’s in store for you on E-Bay, shall we?

Here are all 5 issues of the exceedingly hard-to-find Thor:Vikings miniseries by Garth Ennis.

Well, my friends, we’ve come to the end of yet another issue. I do want to stress that you sign up for the newsletter and read it. I’ve been seeing of late in other media that a lot of you didn’t know about our big Non-Boston-Con signing event this past Saturday and wished you could have come. It’s all right here folks! With links to our web page and Twitter and Facebook where this and other info can be found all the time! And there are special newsletter exclusive deals to be had regularly. We want you to be in the know and a part of the great big Comicazi family.
GREETINGS!!

Last week it was the Lone Ranger. This week, it’s a classic Western-styled Hubba Bubba comic ad from back in the day. I’m feeling cowboy-ish. What, you may ask, am I talking about? Why the accompanying Bad Kid picture at the top of this weekly missive.
Some of you may not even know that the picture changes every week. And some of you just go right to the comic list to see what’s coming out. And that’s all good. But for those of you who take the time to read the entire newsletter, sometimes you’re privy to Comicazi news and info first. Fun facts that don’t always hit our other online outlets like Facebook and the webpage, which of course, are found right above this pulse-pounding print and directly below the aforementioned Hubba Bubba pic.
A sterling example of this would be the upcoming Joe Quinones signing at the shop!! Joe is a local artist, living right outside of Davis Square, and has been doing killer cover work recently for Marvel and Dark Horse. Here are a few teases to whet your appetite:

Great stuff!! And you can have your chance at meeting the man right here at Comicazi on Saturday April 27. So be here at 11am and stay until 2pm because those are the hours wherein Quinones will go all awesome and stuff on you.

Another newsletter only fact to watch out for is the special deals that regularly run as exclusives to those savvy and enlightened readers. And here’s another one coming atcha!!
As Boston Comic Con strikes the city this coming weekend – April 20 and 21 – we here at Comicazi have a limited number of passes to give away. Now listen up!! Here are the NEWSLETTER ONLY deets to win a Boston Comic Con pass!
It’s pretty simple. The first 5 people to bring a printout of this very newsletter on Tuesday through Thursday (April 16, 17, 18) to the counter will get a pass to Comic Con.
That is it. Good luck to all!!

Last week I mentioned our Tavern Drafts. These have been going on for a bit now and from what I’m told, have been pretty successful!
If you’re into playing Magic:The Gathering you’ll want to get in on this. Every Monday evening from 6 to 8 at Johnny D’s, the Draft takes place. $15 gets you three packs and the chance to win some sweet prizes. For more info, feel free to email Gameboy Steve at steven.maloney@ymail.com

The Comicazi Drink & Draw is also happening tonight. It is just like it sounds. You bring your drawing chops to the shop and something to drink and for a couple hours, Defender Dan will lead your artistic charge. All this for a $1. Drinky time however you cut it tonight!! Just refrain from your Tony Stark tendencies please.

Another reason to raise a glass would be the new comics arriving on Wednesday the 17th. This time-honored celebration is the pumping heart of Comicazi and every week your selections are outlined in…

Aahhh!!! Put that glass down. Good stuff. Wednesday will be here before you know it.

Let’s close this issue out by taking a look at what’s in store for you on E-Bay, shall we? I saw some of the items that Mat was organizing to be posted and they’re pretty groovy.

We begin with a return to childhood and classic board game Mousetrap!

The death of Robin issue of Grant Morrison’s Batman And Robin

And we recently got in a collection of different Tarot decks. Here’s one from notorious occultist Aleister Crowley, deemed “the wickedest man in the world” by the press of his day. The art was designed by fellow occultist and Crowley disciple, Lady Frieda Harris. Fascinating stuff!

Just one more thing before putting this issue to bed. I had promised to let you know the Boston Phoenix Best Of Boston 2013 results this week. The final issue of the Phoenix went on sale this past week and according to the online version, the results of the contest are not yet tabulated.
This is understandable considering that they were putting their final issue together. As soon as I learn the results of the contest I’ll post them. Well the comic shop category anyway.
I would like to bid a fond adieu to the Boston Phoenix and give thanks to its years of service and reporting.
Thanks,
Comicazi Mike

GREETINGS!!

Cheese is excellent. I just want to get that out of the way before I begin this issue.
Some cheese and cracker accompaniment as I type away here and all is fine with the world. Barring the Hellmouth of course in Harvard Square. Yes. I made a Whedon reference. Those of you that know me are probably shocked by this. I admit to some consternation myself.
I blame the cheese. It’s making me giddy with joy. Rest assured – or not! – that there will be no further Whedon references in this issue. By me.

Again, I wish to direct your attention to the links above. They’ll lead you to what’s happening here at the shop on any given date. So if your bag is graphic novels, you might care to check out the Book Club and join the discussion for Kingdom Come this week or Atomic Robo at the next meeting. Or you might dig comedy and you’d be inclined to check out what’s shaking with our good friends at Comedycazi.
You pretty much get the picture. You’re smart folks! I know that because you’re Comicazi friends and shoppers, natch! Now me and the gang would be most appreciative if you zipped on over to the page of your choice and liked us and shared the word about us. Merci mes amis!

For those of you who zipped over to the gaming link and enjoy Comicazi for its game offerings, there’s a little something something happening at which you may wish to try your hand. Game Boy Steve will now inform you of what that something something is,

As we all know the heart of all magic stems from the local tavern. So why not come check out our draft nights at Johnny D’s on Mondays 6-8pm? Fifteen dollars gets you 3 booster packs and a chance to cash in on some sweet prizes. To those of you learning to play this is a great way to build up your card collection, learn the mechanics of the game and have a drink with some fellow Magicians. If you have any questions feel free to email me at steven.maloney@ymail.com

Whew! Sounds like fun right? So why wouldn’t you go check it out? Tonight is the night!

There are some fine comics coming this Wednesday 4/10! And there’s only one way to know what’s coming. Well that’s not entirely true. Those of you who rely upon this every week are the favored of Apokolips. And cheese lovers. Look you upon…..

See? I did not lie. Fine four-color fiction awaits your reading pleasure. And before anyone gets technical about that comment, I love alliteration so leave it be. And I’m a comics dinosaur that remembers that sort of color palette.
Anyway. Our very own Max has something to say to you about a title. If he keeps this up, I may have more time to explore the delicious mysteries of cheese.
Take it away sir!

“Following up on Mike’s excitement from a couple weeks ago, I greatly enjoyed Uncanny Avengers #5, even the part that has the X-community up in arms. I’m of course referring to Havok’s dismissal of the word “mutant” in his address to the country as leader of this new team. Real world racial politics aside, I don’t see Havok’s actions as being completely illogical in this instance, because honestly, the word “mutant” isn’t the most flattering way to classify someone, no matter how long we’ve associated that word with super-powers and cool costumes. Either way you wish to perceive it, it’s pretty impossible to argue the beliefs of a fictional character so let’s move onto the fun stuff.

Rick Remender has been a favorite of mine, like Hickman, because of his ability to subvert the readers expectations and his “everything counts” approach to comics continuity. Too often, a writer becomes the new leader of a franchise with the intent of “cleaning the slate” and bringing the book back to its “core” concepts (or their perception of such a thing). Noble intentions of course, but that approach often results in something of a love letter or an imitation of one particular point in a publication’s history. Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men is a popular example of such behavior, while still remaining a good read.

“Everything counts” is so important because that’s where we get drastic character development and the full experience of a shared comics universe. In his epic run on Uncanny X-Force last year, Rick plumbed the depths of the X-universe to bring a story that crossed time and space, using ideas, characters and relationships that spanned decades of X-Men lore. I’m not talking about him winking at us and nudging our arms with a name drop or classic cover homage either. He takes concepts soaked in continuity and drops them in the reader’s lap. As opposed to making “mysterious” new foes and teammates, he streamlined old, convoluted characters and expanded the appeal of others, all while peppering the series with new surprises that were actually…surprising. He challenges himself to tell a story that has deeper meaning to devoted fans who think they’ve seen it all.

Now imagine him being able to do all that with two of the biggest franchises in comics history, and you can see why I’ve fallen in love with this book already. Not to mention he’s got John Cassaday and Oliver Copiel backing him up. Me gusta.”

So go pick up a copy already!! #6 is out this week!!

GREETINGS!!

This week’s Bad Kid companion pic is most appropriate and will set the tone for this edition of the newsletter that crushes all other newsletters. For those of you who don’t know who he is, well, Suffering Sappho, why the heck not??!? Read some vintage comics already! We’ve got them in spades. And for a measly two dollars. They’re good.
And for those of you who do know who he is, good on you! I have nothing for you. Except grudging admiration.

I’m going to try something new to enhance your newsletter experience this time. If it doesn’t work, it’s not my fault. Consider it in the spirit of the day. But as this is going to be a rather long issue – yes, I shall henceforth refer to the newsletters as issues – I thought some entertainment might be enjoyed.

http://youtu.be/EDtK7xUIDxk

A brand new Previews catalog arrived last week and you know what that means? Yes. You get to thrill to new titles suggestions and let us know what you want set aside for your reading pleasure. Up, up, and away!!!

Dark Horse offers you a new series from Gerard Way, the creator of The Umbrella Academy, The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys with some sweetastic art by Becky Cloonan

Captain Midnight returns! Get it for your grandparents!! Or Penza. Adam Warren brings us the Empowered Special #4; Steve Niles and Dave Wachter start a three-issue miniseries, Breath Of Bones:A Tale Of The Golem

DC has lots of new offerings! Scott Snyder and Jim Lee kick off a new Superman series, Superman Unchained; there’s also Greg Pak and Jae Lee together on Batman/Superman

Larfleeze gets his own book, although I don’t know why. It’s by Keith Giffen and Scott Kolins; There’s Trinity Of Sin:Pandora featuring the mysterious woman, Pandora, who jump started the New 52. The title is also a lead-in to the upcoming Trinity War; Batman #21 starts off “Year Zero”, the New 52 origin of the Caped Crusader; Azzarello and Risso return to 100 Bullets with the eight-issue 100 Bullets:Brother Lono; and the best thing to come down the pike from DC in ages is the return of a monthly Astro City!!!

IDW brings back X-Files with a continuation of the show continuity, stunningly called X-Files:Season 10; Joe Hill’s brand of horror continues with the three-issue mini, Thumbprint; and everyone will be talking about Wild Blue Yonder, a sci-fi tale of salvation in the skies. That’s what the hype says anyway. I’ll check it out.

Image Comics has the promising Lazarus by Greg Rucka and Michael Lark, a dystopian, near future tale; smash hits Saga and Walking Dead each release their latest trade paperback volumes, #2 and #18, respectively.

Marvel brings that fanboy dream artist Joe Madureira back to Savage Wolverine with issue #6. I’ll be getting multiple copies; Star-Lord:The Hollow Crown gives you all the background info you need to know on rising star Peter Quill by giving you material from his now hard-to-find early appearances from back in the day; Lee Weeks – who draws awesome! – gives us Daredevil:Dark Nights

Amaze Ink/Slave Labor puts into print for the first time the digital series Eldritch!. Lovecraftian horror meets Monty Python. How can you go wrong? Well, you can but let’s give it a chance.
Avatar Press has the Max Brooks-penned Extinction Parade, humans versus zombies versus vampires. Which species dies? Place your bets!
New publisher Black Mask which I mentioned last month for those of you paying attention has Darick Robertson back on art chores for the sci-fi buddy adventure Ballistic in which a bank robber and his best pal Gun, who is actually a drug-addicted, cursing, living gun get into hijinks.
Boom! Studios gives us the return of the much-liked Herobear And The Kid. ‘Nuff said!!

Dynamite has two sweet new titles coming. The first is Uncanny by Andy Diggle and features a con man who can copy anyone’s abilities, skills, and memories getting swept up in a deadly game of international intrigue; Dy-no-mite! is by the venerable JJ Walker and takes place in Chicago where a teen struggles to get by in the projects until fortune smiles upon him and he becomes “Kid Dy-no-mite”. Antics ensue.
The excellent :01 First Second publisher gives us Primates, a non-fiction graphic novel focusing on the work of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birute Galdikas. Art is by local creator Maris Wicks.
Oni Press gives us the long-running and pioneering webcomic, Diesel Sweeties in the collection Diesel Sweeties:I’m A Rocker. I Rock Out.

It’s pixel-tastic!!

Storm King gives the horror buffs among you the Big Daddy of horror movies a comic chance with John Carpenter’s Asylum.
Titan is a moon of Saturn and also a comic publisher that gives us Alan Moore work that nobody else wants to publish. This time out they try something more like a Saturnian moon and give us the B-movie style It Came!, about a robot laying waste to the English countryside. It has a professor who smokes a pipe and is 4 issues long. If it was 6 issues long, it would appeal more to my sense of symmetry as Titan is the sixth moon of Saturn. But it does have a foreword by our very own Dave Lockwood. Because he’s British. And a robot.
They also offer Tomorrowland about two Vegas deejays who battle to save the spark of creativity! It’s by Paul Jenkins. You should get it because he’s good. And I met him. We talked about Ozzy Osbourne.

Whew!! That’s a pretty nice list of new titles. There’s lots more stuff to be had but these are the ones that stand out to me. Feel free to ask at the shop about anything else. There’s that whole internet sensation that’s going around and comic news can be had there but as it will be going out of business by year’s end, you should get in the habit of acquiring all your comic news at Comicazi. We’re Earth’s Mightiest Comic Shop because we defeated the Internet.

Before I get around to giving you the new comic goodness, I figured I’d try out some more entertainment. It can be an intermission between comic lists. Please take a moment and get yourself pumped.

http://youtu.be/N6yDBiuNQcQ

Now if you’re all psyched up and ready to see what’s coming to the Comicazi shelves on Wednesday April 3rd, I’ll commence. If you’re not, you have to bring each of the staff working the day you come in a lemonade. Hey! I don’t make the rules.
Anyway, All-Father Odin gives unto you The Word, The Wisdom, and The Way…..

Vintage Star Wars toy lot! It’s like you’re 10 years old again! Or non-existent if you’re not old enough to appreciate the awesomeness of the original trilogy. It’s OK though. Mat – who posts our eBay lots – likes Star Wars enough for an Empire!

There’s also quite possibly the greatest Batman story ever printed available for you to read in its entirety. Although it’s hard to imagine anyone who doesn’t already own this comic gold.

Go forth to eBay and marvel and dc at what we have to offer you! There are 200 auctions for you to choose from. Some assembly required.

I think that’s the finale of this issue friends. I hope you’ve enjoyed the fun. Don’t forget to swing by our online locations and “like” us if you haven’t already and/or drop us a line. Follow the electronic roadmaps above all of this verbiage.
Enjoy the day and take this musical nugget with you. Greg Salinger would heed the message.

GREETINGS!!

How about that crew of Avengers in the pic above right beside our bodacious Bad Kid?? That is a team my 14-year old self would have quite possibly jumped for joy to see in a comic.
Well, that is the cover to Rick Remender’s Uncanny Avengers #5 coming out this week. If you see me running and jumping and gushing, now you know why. It only took 30 years.

Before I get to the other titles arriving this week that make some of you nostalgic and giddy, I wanted to remind you of some of the sweet goings on that are taking place at Comicazi.
Don’t forget to take advantage of our titanic NEWSLETTER EXCLUSIVE deal. You can get 30% off of eBay auctions by printing out this very newsletter and presenting it at the shop counter. Either the entire newsletter or just the portion outlining the eBay deal.
Simply let us know that you wish to purchase any item or items that are currently on our eBay page and receive 30% off the item and/or items.
- You must pay for the items at the time of mention. There is no holding/layaway.
- You may also call the shop and pay by credit card if you cannot make it to the shop in person.
- It is first come, first serve.

Here are just a couple of quick glimpses at what’s available for this deal:
For the wrestling fans amongst you – and I know there are more than 7 of you – there’s a WWE replica championship belt

While on the topic of battling, there’s also this gem from the vintage Fireside Books collection

Plenty more can be found each and every week on E-Bay. Be sure to check it out regular-like. Mat would be most pleased. And we might let him out of the basement.

Also, it’s another full week of fun at the shop what with Book Club, gaming, and Comedycazi. You do know that you can find out that Book Club is going to be reviewing Saga and gaming happens every Wednesday night by checking out the Comicazi web page right? And that I’ve provided handy links to wherever you want to electronically travel right? Comicazi-wise anyway. They’re right under that sweet Avengers pic I mentioned earlier. Go already!! Because now it’s time to regale you with the new books arriving on Wednesday via the time-honored

That’s how you close out a month! With a stellar Wednesday’s worth of comic-y goodness!
And you can close out a newsletter with another staff review! This week you’re hearing from Max and his thoughts on what’s happening with Marvel in general. Take it away good sir!!

“I’ve been mighty impressed with the Marvel NOW initiative that has been going on since Avengers Vs X-Men concluded. No single issue has made me regret purchasing it. Although there’ve been no changes to continuity, there’s been a definite shift in publishing tactics, including making sure artists have enough time to complete a whole story arc and a revival of the “done in one (or two)” style of storytelling.

It’s no surprise that they let John Hickman take over their flagship Avengers and its sister book New Avengers, considering what a tremendous job he did subtly nurturing Fantastic Four into a two-book franchise as well as redefining their mission and greatly expanding their cast. Yup, he gave the Fantastic FOUR a dozen new members and not a single one of them can be spared in my eyes.

His first 8 issues on Avengers have been dynamite, using similar tactics and subverting expectations in the most pleasant ways possible. He starts with the core group (the movie team, natch) going to Mars and getting their butts handed to them by a new crew of baddies with refreshing reasons. From there, Cap assembles the rest of the team, puts on a change of clothes, and hauls ass back to Mars to finish things on his terms. By the end of the third issue the new team has been formed and had their first mission, all while showing the motives for each member as well as some fun interactions that remind me of the late 80s Justice League.

Bendis does a good job of bringing focus back to some classic concepts with a team of mainstream and not-so-mainstream characters (who have definitely benefitted from the exposure). Hickman is taking things beyond the Marvel Universe with an eclectic team of powerhouses. Oh, I forgot that he’s added Superman to the book too. No biggie.”

Well stated Max!! I would recommend that you bend Max’s ear the next time you see him in the shop and try some of his suggestions. The man knows his stuff.

Actually I get to close out the newsletter as this is my little corner of Comicazi-land. Great Rao! Now wouldn’t that be a place to go..?? But I digress.
In closing, there are lots of trades back in stock this week so check the shelves for your favorites. Or our favorites. There are handy guide cards on the shelves to suggest some of our picks.
We’re also always willing to look at your collections so bring them on in and we’ll treat you right!

Big things are coming your way! Keep on keepin’ on my friends!
Comicazi Mike

GREETINGS!!

I have no clever opening. Or even an unfunny one for those of you who don’t think I’m clever. Or funny. I don’t know who those people are but I’ll still share the following information with ‘em!!
Hmmm….guess that could qualify as a clever opening. Anyway. Forward Ho!!!

Brace your eyes for the following information!! (Ouch) It is time for a New Deal!! And this one is not in response to a Great Depression. As a matter of fact, this Deal is cause for Rejoicing. Not one of the “3 R’s” that were the basis of the original New Deal.
See? Not only is Comicazi fun and awesome but we’re historical, too!

Here are the deets for the latest NEWSLETTER EXCLUSIVE deal. You can get 30% off of eBay auctions by printing out this very newsletter and presenting it at the shop counter. Either the entire newsletter or just the portion outlining the eBay deal.

I kind of want to wear this but I’ll leave it for a lucky winner. Well, that, and my lady probably won’t let me

How about a first printing of Walking Dead #61? Which is noteworthy for being the first appearance of Chew, the hit crime/horror book you should be reading.

it’s a big week of new comic-y goodness!! Lots of very good titles to be had. And if you’ve been following this newsletter you’ll know that every so often, I’ll single out one the comic-y good comic titles that we have. something you might not be reading and maybe should check out.
Well this time around, I hand over the suggestion reins to our very own Trescha! She’s the sassy one with the changing hair color. She thinks that if you haven’t yet picked up Fashion Beast, that maybe you should. And here’s why:
“The first thing that caught my eye with Fashion Beast was the cover. The art has a great, dark imagery. The story with the wording flows seamlessly with the art, drawing you into a dark vision of the fashion world.
There are a few plot points that are a bit predictable but the storyline still has me guessing and is extremely enjoyable.”

Thanks Trescha!! Here’s to some of you trying out one of her fave titles. And next time around I’ll see what I can do about getting another one of the gang to recommend one of their fave books.

That should about do it for this round my friends!! Thanks again for letting me brighten your inboxes and may the Vishanti smile upon you.
Until next week I remain….
